Every U.S. package carries some version of this panel. The layout is standardized by the FDA, so once you know what each block means, you can read any product's label the same way.

Nearly every number on the label is based on the stated serving size. If a label lists 1 cup / 250 calories and you eat two cups, you've consumed roughly 2 × 250 = 500 calories, and the same scaling applies to fat, sodium, carbohydrate, fiber, and protein.
Serving size ≠ portion size. Serving size is the standardized amount used to build the label; portion size is however much you actually eat. And no: serving size is not a recommendation. Per the FDA, it's based on amounts people typically consume, not amounts you should eat.
Ten fields make up the bulk of the panel. Each one below is tagged as something to watch for a limit (red), something to seek out more of (green), or a neutral reference number (gray-green).
Energy per serving. Three servings at 230 calories each means 690 calories for the package, which is why checking calories before serving size is misleading. The familiar "2,000 calories a day" footnote is a general reference for labeling, not a personal target; individual needs vary by age, sex, size, and activity.
%DV shows how much one serving contributes toward a full day's worth of that nutrient. You don't need to memorize each Daily Value, just the 5/20 rule.
DV or less is considered low in that nutrient per serving.
DV or more is considered high in that nutrient per serving.
For nutrients to limit, look for a lower %DV. For nutrients you want more of, look for a higher %DV.
Total Fat is listed in grams, with Saturated Fat and Trans Fat broken out underneath for more context. Saturated fat is one of the nutrients the FDA recommends limiting.
Trans fat has no established %DV on the label; compare products using the gram amount directly.
Listed in milligrams with a %DV. The same 5/20 rule applies: 5% DV or less is low, 20% DV or more is high.
Measured in milligrams. The FDA Daily Value is under 2,300mg per day for adults and children age 4+. A serving at 460mg is 20% DV, high under the 5/20 rule. Eat two servings and you've taken in 920mg, so recheck serving size before you judge a sodium number.
Grams of carbohydrate per serving, broken into Dietary Fiber, Total Sugars, and Added Sugars beneath it.
One of the nutrients the FDA flags as under-consumed. Useful for comparing similar products (bread, cereal, pasta, wraps, bars, crackers) when serving sizes line up.
This is the most commonly misread line on the label. Added Sugars are already counted inside Total Sugars; never add the two together.
Naturally occurring sugars come from foods like fruit and milk. Because Added Sugars carry their own Daily Value, a product at 24% DV added sugars is high per the 5/20 rule.
Shown in grams; a %DV isn't required on every label. When comparing two products, check that serving sizes match: 15g protein per 100g isn't equivalent to 15g protein per 200g.
Listed with both an amount and a %DV: the four micronutrients the FDA highlights as ones many people should get more of.
Lower %DV is generally better for these three.

Ingredients are listed in descending order by weight: the first ingredient makes up more of the product than every ingredient that follows it.

Whole wheat flour is present in a greater amount by weight than everything listed after it. Reading both the panel and the ingredients gives a fuller picture than either alone.
A single product can be high in a nutrient you want more of and a nutrient you want to limit, which is exactly why you read the whole panel, not one number.
All figures apply to one cup. Eat two, and most amounts roughly double.

Cereal A runs slightly lower in calories and sodium. Cereal B brings more fiber and protein with less added sugar. Neither is universally "better"; it depends what you're prioritizing. If the two labels used different serving sizes, you'd need to scale one before comparing at all.
